Pole position: Alain Prost 2:04.615 Alain Prost just won pole from Patrick Tambay at Spa, with Andrea De Cesaris an impressive third in his Alfa Romeo. It was the Alfa driver who made the best start and took the lead. He looked like a strong candidate to win the race, but a long pit stop dropped him behind Prost’s Renault. His race ended for good when his engine failed. Prost won, with Tambay finishing in the second place he’d started in. Eddie Cheever was third in the other Renault, with Nelson Piquet’s Brabham behind him. In fifth place was Keke Rosberg, the first of the normally aspirated runners, in his Williams. Jacques Laffite scored the final point in the sister Williams. A notable debutant at the Belgian Grand Prix was Thierry Boutsen, who replaced Chico Serra at Arrows.
