Nelson Piquet set the pre-race scene again to take pole position in his Brabham BMW. In the race we see Piquet scorch away in the early laps, Prost suffer a spectacular and rare failure from his TAG Porsche engine, Mansell spinning off with his rear brakes locked and Niki Lauda continuing his calculated and seemingly unstoppable charge for the World Drivers title. Being Italian or driving Ferrari also means that you have to put on a big show at Monza, so the fine efforts of Teo Fabi in the second Brabham, de Angelis in the Lotus and Alboreto in the Ferrari add spice to this very quick motor race.
