LXIV ING Belgian Grand Prix Location: Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Spa, Belgium Course: Permanent racing facility 7.004 km (4.352 mi) Distance: 44 laps, 308.176 km (191.492 mi) Weather: Cloudy, rain in last 3 laps Pole position: Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 1:47.338 Felipe Massa was fastest during the first practice session, ahead of team-mate Kimi Räikkönen and McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen. They were followed by Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and both Toro Rossos. Toyota's Jarno Trulli missed most of the session after his car suffered an electrical problem. Rain and bad track conditions reduced practice time for the second session. The conditions caused multiple accidents including Webber, who slid off at Rivage hairpin and had to abandon his session. Räikkönen spun at Malmedy corner with the back of his car hitting the barriers, causing a large amount of water to be dislodged on to the track. Giancarlo Fisichella fell victim to this wet patch and his car aquaplaned into the barriers. Fisichella's crash resulted in the session being red flagged for 10 minutes while the Malmedy corner was cleared. The track still remained difficult to drive on, with Nelson Piquet Jr. nearly replicating Räikkönen's accident at Malmedy. It was only in the closing minutes that drivers were able to log better timings, with Alonso fastest at the end of the session. Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber topped the final session, ahead of the McLarens in second and fourth positions, with Alonso managing third. The conditions were damp at the start, and became worse as the rain continued throughout the early part of the session. The track, however, dried towards the end of the practice. Sébastien Bourdais of Toro Rosso was fastest in the first qualifying session with a late flying lap, ahead of Kovalainen and Massa. The Force India cars, which employed their seamless-shift gearboxes for the second time in this race, were eliminated along with both Honda cars and Williams' Kazuki Nakajima. The second qualifying session was dominated by the McLaren drivers, with Kovalainen claiming first position. They were followed by Räikkönen and Heidfeld, who managed to outpace Massa. Rosberg, who faced problems with his car's grip, much like his team-mate Nakajima, was relegated to the bottom of the table for this session. Williams mechanics were at a loss to explain the cars' problems. The Toyota drivers had problems with warming their cars' tyres to operative temperatures, as Trulli and Glock were eliminated in positions 11 and 13, respectively. Piquet Jr. and David Coulthard were the other two drivers who did not qualify for the third session. Lewis Hamilton secured pole position, beating Massa's lap time during the final runs in the third session. They were followed by Räikkönen, Kovalainen and Heidfeld. Alonso, Webber and Kubica were sixth, seventh and eighth fastest in the final session. Toro Rosso continued their strong weekend, taking the last two positions of the top ten. In the press conference following qualifying, Massa said the difference between pole position and second place was down to the car. He said that strategy would be the most important aspect of Ferrari's race, while both McLaren drivers remained confident that the balance of their car was solid, with Kovalainen identifying the second sector (Les Combes to Stavelot) as a possible weakness.
