Heikki Kovalainen was leading the qualifying ahead of the last round of laps in Q3, however Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso all put in faster lap times, qualifying in that order. Hamilton finished two places ahead of his title rival Felipe Massa. Red Bull's Mark Webber qualified sixth but was then relegated 10 places for an unscheduled engine change - having already used up his "joker" engine change before the Italian Grand Prix - while BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld had finished sixth but was demoted three places for impeding David Coulthard's Red Bull in Q1 - his second grid penalty in three races. Notes * Mark Webber dropped 10 places on the grid after an unscheduled engine change. * Nick Heidfeld penalised three grid positions for impeding David Coulthard during first qualifying session.
