The Congo Basin is one of the most efficient ecosystems on earth. It supports a great diversity of wildlife, but its rainforest, a vast green blanket covering an area the size of Mexico, rests on sand-derived soils and is extremely fragile. It seems impossible that anybody can live here, but hidden by trees, are the forest homes of more than thirty thousand Baka people. The Baka believe they were thrown out of heaven for being too noisy. Their rich and complex music, language and laughter echo amidst the sounds of birds, insects and small primates. But now another, more terrifying sound has entered the forest: the shrill scream of a logger's giant saw.
