William van Baskerville raakt in het middeleeuwse Italië bevriend met Adso, een jonge soldaat en zoon van een Duitse generaal. De twee trekken naar een afgelegen klooster waar een ontmoeting plaatsvindt tussen een delegatie van de paus en van de keizer. William en Adso komen aan op het moment dat het lichaam van een monnik gevonden wordt. Het overlijden wordt afgedaan als zelfmoord, maar er blijkt meer aan de hand wanneer een tweede lichaam ontdekt wordt.

Adso does not give himself peace for the girl's fate and asks William to do everything to help her. Baskerville decides to talk to the inquisitor, who initially seems to be listening to him but has actually already made a decision.
